Did you say "unrecognized translating"?

A posting on Unprofessional Translation dwells on the issue of unrecognised translation.

Unrecognised translation actually is the rule rather than the exception in most parts of Africa.

Imagine somebody writing in Arabic, English, French, Portuguese, Spanish to an acquaintance who does not speak the language? How do you think the person gets to understand the message? Imagine someone reading the Gospel seemingly in a native African language when the text is actually in English, French, or any of the other exogenous official languages of Africa? ... Well, that's just what happens all the time across Africa, the continent of 2000+ languages. And the bulk of it remains unrecognised as translation.

As a matter of evidence, this activity tends to be seen simply as a natural skill which bilingual persons are, right or wrongly, expected to have.... Definitely, this is an area worth further investigation.
